2007-10-20 CVRTC 5K

Time to start logging workouts, again. I've been in "maintenance mode" all summer, but what I'm maintaining is last winter's off-season shape. Oops. I could make up excuses all day long, but the simple fact is that I haven't been working out as much as I could, and my weight is slowly creeping back up. Oh well.

A month or two ago, my pal WDH helped motivate me by putting up a burrito from my favorite burrito joint as the over/under payoff on a 25 minute 5K by the middle of October.

Slacker that I am, I managed to pull one out even though I am still a bit overweight and undertrained. This morning, I knocked out a 23:59 (7:43/mile) at the CVRTC 5K, beating my goal time a full minute. It took everything I had. There was no finish-line-sprint involved :). My HR was over 180 for most of the race. I thought my HR max was 182, but I held it at more than that for the entire last two miles. I think I'm still in good shape aerobically, but my muscles are way off. My calves were CRUSHED at the end of the run. I think my form while running slow (my default :-)) is different than my form while running quick. Today was really the first time I tried running fast at all this year. My hamstrings and calves were both far more involved than normal.

The race was a ton of fun, so maybe I'll try to do a 5K every month or so. I'm not sure what my next goal should be. I think I can get down to 22 minutes or so if I can simply strip off my spare tire again. I would love to find a way to get to 20 minutes, but I'm not sure what it would take to get there. I might try for 23 minutes by year-end, 22 by first day of spring. But that might be pushing things a bit.

WDH rocked the hell out of the race. He got 4th overall, 1st in our age group. Not bad for a guy who was doing 10 minute/mile a year ago!

I also saw NP, a former coworker, at the race. The last time I saw him, he was 50 pounds heavier, smoked, and had high blood pressure. Today he whipped out 23:24, crushing his former PR. Go Nate!!!
